Title: Afterworlds

Goodreads Synopsis:
Darcy Patel has put college and everything else on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. Arriving in New York with no apartment or friends she wonders whether she's made the right decision until she falls in with a crowd of other seasoned and fledgling writers who take her under their wings…

Told in alternating chapters is Darcy's novel, a suspenseful thriller about Lizzie, a teen who slips into the 'Afterworld' to survive a terrorist attack. But the Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead and as Lizzie drifts between our world and that of the Afterworld, she discovers that many unsolved - and terrifying - stories need to be reconciled. And when a new threat resurfaces, Lizzie learns her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she loves and cares about most.

If you've been reading my blog for a while then you will know that last year when I started my blog, I was going crazy about this book and I was so hyped for it to come out because I loved the cover and the concept. Just under a year later I have finally read it and I have to say, I was underwhelmed.

I had not seen too many great things about this book and I seemed to fall into the majority. This story is in alternating chapters, one talking about Darcy's story about publishing her book and then her actual book that she'd written.

I enjoyed the sections of Darcy's story about her in New York. I loved her character and all the relationships she formed. The characters in general on this side of the story were really good and I loved all of them.

I found it interesting and enjoyable to read about how she got published and what life is like to live in New York and I found myself generally liking reading about her story.

On the other hand, the actual book she'd written that was included in the story...I didn't like so much.

In this book she'd written, the world was confusing and maybe just not my thing. It seemed a bit jumpy because it kept changing the aim of the story and it kept going off track. I had a hard time trying to figure out where the story was going and what the characters were supposed to be doing.

Also, Darcy and all her friends in the book claimed that the main character in Darcy's book was all this and all that but I mainly felt that her characters were dry and annoying at times.

If this book had just purely been Darcy's publishing story then I would've given this book a much higher rating but in the end I gave this book...

3/5 stars

That's all for this review! I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you soon!

Happy reading!

  1. So with you with this, that was my problem. I LOVED seeing Darcy's part and a little insight into all the work that goes into publishing and the author meet ups, that was really fun. Her book on the other hand...nope. Didn't like it. I mean, it was "that" type of book, instalove, mythology made into romance and not really mythology at all. Ugh. :(

    1. I totally agree. I really enjoyed seeing the process that Darcy went through but her book was just not good!
