Review: I Was Here by Gayle Forman

Title: I Was Here
Author: Gayle Forman
Publishers: Simon and Schuster
Page Count: 270

Goodreads Synopsis:

From the bestselling author of If I Stay - this summer's YA blockbuster film.

This characteristically powerful novel follows eighteen-year-old Cody Reynolds in the months following her best friend's shocking suicide.

As Cody numbly searches for answers as to why Meg took her own life, she begins a journey of self-discovery which takes her to a terrifying precipice, and forces her to question not only her relationship with the Meg she thought she knew, but her own understanding of life, love, death and forgiveness.

A phenomenally moving story, I Was Here explores the sadly all-too-familiar issue of suicide and self-harm, addressing it in an authentic way with sensitivity and honesty.

I have read Just One Day and If I stay by Gayle Forman and I found both of them okay but I didn't love either of them and with this book I still do not know how I feel all together because this book did not blow me away but I was also surprised and satisfied by the direction this book took.

The premise of this book is interesting and I was expecting it to be more of a physiological book but it turns out that the main character Cody does some hard core Catfishing and stalking and even though that is a bit of an iffy subject I thought in this book it was extremely interesting. Without giving too much about this book away, I thought that watching Cody uncover things and do things about Meg was really interesting.

Another thing I liked about this book was the tech aspects that it had. In this book a big focus was on what Meg was hiding in her computer and for some reason I really enjoy the aspects like that! I liked not knowing what was going on and not knowing anyones motives and reasons except from the main characters.

I found in this book that I thought the main character was alright. I did not love her so to say but I did not hate her and I did like the way she thought and dealt with things (except for the end because that was a little crazy and I would not have done what she did...just sayin...). I did however like some of the side characters like Meg's brother and roommates but I especially liked the love interest in this book.

The love and love interest in this book was nothing special but I enjoyed it because the guy in this book Ben was described as how I imagine all the love interests in books I read (yes, despite the author making a detailed description of the love interests looks, I can only ever picture them as this same guy). The romance in this book took a back seat which I liked because I didn't think it was necessary with all the action going on in this book.

I liked the writing in this book as I do will all of Gayle Forman's books. I find her books quick and easy reads and I have no issues with her writing but the things that just don't do it for me in her books are the main characters and the plots (Don't hate me). I just find the main characters alright and the plots fairly entertaining but this is probably my favourite of her books.

I gave I Was Here...

  3. This one sounds like a pretty good book and that you enjoyed it more than the other Gayle Foreman's book. It also deals with some sensitive subjects, and those are the kind of ones that I enjoy reading because then we can relate with those who have those problems better. I am going to try this one at some point!
