DNF Review: Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Title: Uprooted
Author: Naomi Novik
Publishers: Del Rey
Page Count: 438

Goodreads Synopsis:

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose

I was excited to start this book because of the high ratings on Goodreads and the amount of hype surrounding this book but when I started it I just knew that this book was not going to work for me.

I started out by not liking the main character. She seemed weak and uninteresting. Throughout the parts of the book I read I did not see very much character development and I just didn't like her overall. Also, I did not like the Dragon as the love interest. I did not dislike his character on his own but when I started to realise that he would be the love interest I did not like it one bit.

I didn't think the relationship in this book worked because it felt unnatural and forced because the dragon was the only man that Nieszka was around. I felt uncomfortable reading their relationship and it just totally put me off this book.

I did not enjoy the writing in this book either because I found myself getting confused quite often and I think it might have been because of the way this book is written. I did find myself having times in this book when I was enjoying it but other times the main reason I wasn't enjoying it in general was because of the writing and it didn't mesh well with me.

As for the plot, the general plot is interesting but when I was close to giving up on this book I was pretty much half way through and I had no idea where the plot was going and I was not excited or interested in finding out what happened.

Overall I did enjoy a few parts of this book but overall it wasn't for me. I gave the half of this book that I read...

2/5 Stars

  2. Ah, what a shame you didn't like this one. But I completely see why. I found myself having similar thoughts when I read this a few weeks back, although I did enjoy it a touch more. I loved the idea of the story... but the writing was hard to read at points. lovely review!

  3. Well, not every book is for everyone :( Such a shame this one didn't work out for you. I almost bought this book the other day, but was worried that I wouldn't like it, so I am waiting until it is older and a bit cheaper ^^
