Review: Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver

Title: Vanishing Girls
Author: Lauren Oliver
Publishers: HarperCollins
Page Count: 357

Goodreads Synopsis:

Dara and Nick used to be inseparable, but that was before the accident that left Dara's beautiful face scarred and the two sisters totally estranged. When Dara vanishes on her birthday, Nick thinks Dara is just playing around. But another girl, nine-year-old Madeline Snow, has vanished, too, and Nick becomes increasingly convinced that the two disappearances are linked. Now Nick has to find her sister, before it's too late.

This book was so much more than I expected it to be. I was worried about how I would feel about this book as I have mixed views on Lauren Oliver's books because I loved the Delirium trilogy but really did not like Panic so I did not know how I would feel about this book but luckily I really liked it!

The characters in this book were okay. By this I mean that they were good characters but I did not feel very connected to them and sometimes I felt that they came off as unrealistic but I enjoyed reading about them and all the stuff that they got up to.

I enjoyed the Before and After aspects of the book because you could really see the difference in their relationship after the accident.

As the synopsis said, her sister vanishes and I was expecting this to happen quite close to the start of the book so the rest of the book would be about Nick trying to find her but the disappearance happened in the second half of the book so that left me thinking that the first half of the book was a waste but I realise now that it wasn't.

The second half of the novel was a lot more interesting than the first half because the mystery and thriller aspects came into play and I started to enjoy the book more.

With the second half being full of action, I felt that the ending didn't really connect. Don't get me wrong, I loved the ending of this book because it was totally unexpected but I don't think it really fit with the rest of the book. I think that the ending of this book would fit better if the whole story continued on like the first half of the book without the mystery.

The mystery aspect of this book was very interesting but I think it would be even better if the ending was different.

In my opinion, Oliver could have either made the whole book like the first half of the series which was more contemporary and keep the original ending, or, she could have made the whole book like the second half so more like a mystery and used a different ending.

Overall I enjoyed this book whilst I was reading it but when I finished it I could see the faults so I gave this book...

 3.5/5 stars.

That's all for this review! I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you again soon!

Happy Reading!

  1. I have been right in the middle with Lauren's books, they have been interesting but not mind blowing. I am planning on reading this one but with less anticipation!

    1. I'm in the middle too except I either like it or I don't! Think one is certainly 'mind blowing' except don't expect it to make perfect sense!

  2. I have very mixed feelings with Lauren Oliver books like you. While I loved the first two books from the Delerium series I didn't like the ending at all. I tried to read Panic and couldn't get through it and actually didn't she had a new book out xD Will have to look into this one since it sounds so intriguing
