Review: Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

Title: Snow Like Ashes
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publishers: Balzer + Blay
Page Count: 416

Goodreads Synopsis:

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

It took me a while to get around to reading this book but when I sat down and read it I really enjoyed it! This book was such a great fantasy with all the powers and settings! I loved this book very much.

At the start of this book I thought I was not going to enjoy it and that I would find it slow and hate the main character but I started to really get intrigued by this book and I found that I was rooting for Meira and what she was trying to do!

This book is set in many different places in this world and that is one of the many things that I loved about this book! The characters travel lots so we see tons of the surroundings and I think Sara did an amazing job at describing and making these places really awesome.

The plot of this book was interesting from the start, this was because the main goal/purpose of the characters was to retrieve the locket halves so that power could be restored and Winter could be rebuilt but this book changed course when we started to see the issues that the characters faced and their resolutions.

At the start, I did not think that I would like Meira as a character because I thought she'd be another dry character which is trying to follow characters like Katniss and Tris etc. By this I mean that she would have been a strong female characters but she would not have a personality or a motive which is what some characters miss especially in YA but as the book went on I really started to like her and started to root for her and her outcomes.

This is another book that I've read recently that has some awesome side characters. Even though side characters were not as prominent in this book I still loved ones such as Sir, Theron and sometimes Mather.

My only complain about this book is that at the start and in a few patches it can be a bit slow but that is nothing in comparison to all the action that goes on.

This book had so many plot twists that I was just SO not expecting! When I thought something was going to happen, the opposite happened and I was constantly surprised and there was so much betrayal and shocking things that these characters had done! This book did not end how I quite expected it to but I am beyond excited now for the next book!

Overall I really enjoyed this book and am now highly anticipating Ice like Fire! I gave this book...

5/5 stars

That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you again soon!

Happy Reading!
