Review: The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West

Title: The Fill-In Boyfriend
Author: Kasie West
Publishers: HarperTeen
Page Count: 344

Goodreads Synopsis:

When Gia Montgomery's boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she'd been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend—two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley.

The problem is that days after prom, it's not the real Bradley she's thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn't even know. But tracking him down doesn't mean they're done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend's graduation party—three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.

Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.

The synopsis of this book caught me as soon as I read it back in the middle of 2015 and I've only just gotten round to reading it but I'm so glad that I did! The thing that drew me to this book is the synopsis, I had no idea how Gia would get into this situation and how she would get herself out of it so I was hooked on finding out.

This was my first Kasie West novel so I'd never experienced her writing before and although I could say that it was similar to the writing commonly found in contemporary novels, I still really enjoyed her writing and how she crafted her characters. I thought Gia was such a realistic main character, she was the right amount of comical, sarcastic and sassy and the right amount smart and responsible. I put my faith in her as a character to make the right decisions and I feel that she did.

Our love interest in this book was one of the best book boyfriend I've ever read (who shall not be named due to reasons you will understand if you've read the book). I was worried that because we often saw him reading a book and found out that he was an actor that participated in a lot of Shakespeare's plays, that he would fit into that stereotype but I was so relieved when I found that his character had a lot more depth and more personality than most characters that try to fit into that stereotype of being a dreamy boy who reads books and this that and the other.

The plot of this book was more interesting than I thought it would be. I loved the feud between Gia and Jules and I loved how Gia and boy who shall not be named got together and how their relationship bloomed.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I gave it...

  3. I have heard brilliant things about this book but have never tried it out for myself. I know the author is also a very popular one as well. But I just read a fake-girlfriend kind of story (it was my first) and this one seems to be along the lines of that. So I might take a moment of pause before I try this one out too!
