On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure and to live a lifetime in a single day.
This book intrigued me from the get-go because why wouldn't it? A world where you get an alert the day you're going to die telling you you're going to die and then a huge adventure?? Sounds pretty intriguing to me.
The concept itself is definitely a cool one and it was so interesting to see this alternate world where this kind of technology exists and how different it would be to our world now. In fact, reading about this concept was the more enjoyable part of the book. My one issue with this book and hence why I did not give it a five star rating is that the 'on last great adventure' is not what I expected at all. I felt that the events of their last great adventure were indeed cute and a nice story but when you're told that two characters are going to die so they're going to try and have 'one last great adventure' you kind of expect something like world domination or at least something bigger than the events of this book to be quite honest.
Despite saying that I did really enjoy the majority of this book, mainly like I said the concept but also the characters. Mateo and Rufus were completely different personality wise and they spurred each other on to do things they never would've other this one day and it was really lovely and entertaining to watch how their characters grew as the story progressed. I have to give serious props to Adam Silvera for his characters because I love all the side characters too, especially Lidia and The Plutos. Having these amazing side characters really helped with the plot and without them I do believe the story wouldn't have been nearly as interesting.
I'd heard from most peoples reviews that they cried at the end of the book but that wasn't the case for me. Obviously I was sad about what had happened to Mateo and Rufus, however I feel like my love for the story had deflated when their great adventure took a different turn than I thought it would so I was constantly thinking in my head, yo, I just want to see how they die now (a bit rough but I'm being honest) so I don't really feel like I had the opportunity to invest myself in the characters enough and the relationships.
However it was an overall enjoyable read, despite not being the story I would've preferred it to be. I still thought the writing was wonderful and so were the AMAZING characters and it is definitely worth the read.
